Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Ann Skeldon was born on 12 September 1828 in Oldhamstocks, Haddingtonshire, Scotland – the daughter of George Skeldon, an agricultural labourer, and Mary Neilson.

She married James Inglis on 7 January 1854 in Oldhamstocks and they had three children before they emigrated to Otago in 1860 on the Robert Henderson.

Their youngest child died on the voyage and they were to have a further three children in New Zealand.

For the first few years the family lived at Mt Stuart near Glenore where James worked as a driver and carter.

In the 1870s they moved to their farm near Milton where Ann signed the suffrage petition.

James died at 'Burnside Farm' in 1902 and Ann died on 1 January 1919, they are buried in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.

Ann’s obituary said she 'was in full possession of all her faculties up to the time of her last illness, and maintained an interest in current local topics.'
