Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jennie/Jeanie Phillips was born in 1865 in Durham, England – the daughter of Robert Hall Phillips, a butcher and grocer, and Jane Davison.

She emigrated to Victoria, Australia with her family in 1886 on the Lady Lawrence and she married George Lachlan Abercrombie in 1889 in Victoria.

They had a son the following year before they sailed for New Zealand where they had a further four children.

When Jennie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Owaka where George worked as an accountant and commission agent.

They moved to Alexandra in 1900 and two years later went to Dunedin.

George died in 1925 at their home 'Oaklands' in Andersons Bay, Dunedin and Jennie died on 14 July 1961.

They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
