Jane McMaster was born on 6 June 1835 in Kilmallie, Argyllshire, Scotland – the daughter of Donald McMaster, a shepherd, & Ann Gillies.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1849 on the Larkins and they settled at Waihola, south of Dunedin.

Jane married George Buchanan McNeil on 3 April 1856 at her home 'Fassfern' at Waihola and they had eight children.

George died in 1866, he is buried in the Warepa Cemetery.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition she was living with two of her children in Hanover St, Dunedin.

She died on 27 December 1898 and is buried with her two children in the Northern Cemetery.
