Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Agnes Joan MacPherson was born on 30 September 1867 in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland – the daughter of John MacPherson, a Free Church Minister, and Harriet MacLean.
Agnes emigrated to New Zealand and on 3 January 1891 she married John Neil Stewart, a school teacher, at the Mornington Manse, Dunedin. She gave the Manse as her address when she signed the suffrage petition a couple of years later.
Agnes and John had three daughters and, when Agnes died on 30 December 1948, they were living in Christchurch. John died the following year; their burial place is not known.
