Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Thurley was born in 1844 in Milton, Cambridgshire, England – the daughter of Robert Thurley, an agricultural labourer, and Mary Bird.

She married Thomas Cole, a cabinet maker, in Middlesex in 1865. They had four children, two who died in infancy, before they emigrated to Otago in 1873 on the Zealandia.

Another seven children were born after their arrival.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Main Rd, Kensington, Dunedin and Thomas was working as an undertaker.

Jane died on 6 April 1909 and Thomas died in 1915. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
