Jane Henry CARR was born in 1860 in Glasgow Scotland, the daughter of coal miner Thomas and Susan WATSON. Jane H married Ebenezer Caleb CARR in 1887 in Auckland, NZ. He was a widower, his first wife Jane Eliza having died in 1884, leaving him with two young sons. After his second marriage, E C Carr was listed as a settler and farmer in Kaukapakapa, a small settlement north west of Auckland on the Kaipara Harbour. Both Ebenezer and Jane appear on the electoral rolls in 1896 and 1900 in Kaukapakapa. EC Carr was a prominent member of the Temperance Movement and a lay preacher. Three more sons were born to the second marriage.
By 1903, the family had moved to Waiuku where Ebenezer appears in Wises’ Directory as a boarding house keeper. He died later that year. Jane became a teacher and in 1906 was appointed to Omaha Little School. Early in 1913 the newspaper reported “Mrs Carr, the Leigh teacher has resigned the service with the intention of taking up her residence in town.”
Jane moved to Auckland city and was living in Halls Ave, Remuera when she received the news that her son Charles was KIA in France in 1916. She then moved to 16 Momona Road, One Tree Hill and lived there until her death in 1944. She was buried with the husband she outlived for 40 years, in Purewa Cemetery, Auckland. She left her estate of under 800 pounds to her two sons.
