Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jane Lowden was born in 1840 in Durham, England – the daughter of John Lowden, an engine wright, and Alice Elphinstone.
She married Thomas Maw, a forgeman, in 1858 and they had eight children, four who died in infancy.
Thomas died in 1872 and, in 1879, Jane emigrated to Otago on the Taranaki with her extended family including her sister Alice. (See 93 Alice Davis)
She married John Jacob Helmkey, a German confectioner and pastrycook, in 1880 and they had one son.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Great King St, Dunedin.
They later moved to Howe St where Jane died on 26 April 1908. John died in 1930, they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
