Jane McVitie Lockerbie was born on 11 November 1863 in Dumfries, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Lockerbie, a tailor, and Margaret Livingstone.
She came to New Zealand and married John Menzies Kennedy, a hairdresser, in 1888.
They had seven children and when Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Bluff.
John was declared bankrupt in 1893 and the family moved to Winton in 1899.
John died in 1910 when he was thrown from his horse and fractured his skull.
Jane died in Winton on 18 December 1922 – she is buried with John in the Winton Cemetery.
