Jane (or Jeanie) Allender was born in Belfast in 1866. She married Alex Ker, a Wellingtonian auditor, in Belfast in 1891. By the time she signed the suffrage petition in 1893, she and Alex were living in the suburb of Mt Victoria, Wellington, with their one-year-old son James. A daughter, Alice, was born that year. Two more children, Margaret and Alexander, came later. Jane moved with her family to Salamanca Road in Kelburn, Wellington, where she died in 1905, aged 39.
