Jane Humphreys was born about 1867 and, in London in 1883, she married James McAuliffe. They had two children before they emigrated to New Zealand on the Kaikoura in 1887. Another two children were born in New Zealand.

In 1893 the family were living in Josephine St, Caversham, later moving to Surrey St. In 1900 they opened a fruit shop in Main Road, Caversham, James occupation at his death was still fruiterer.

Jane died at Douglas St, Dunedin on 27 September 1945 and James died in 1951. They are buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
