Jane Keay was born about 1839 in Dundee, Forfarshire, Scotland – the daughter of David Keay, a mason, and Isabella.
She married James McGill, a builder, in 1865 in New Zealand and they had seven children.
When Jane signed the suffrage petition in Caversham the family were living in Moray Place, Dunedin.
She died at her home on 16 November 1906 and James died in 1909 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
