Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane Crawford was born about 1837 in Scotland – the daughter of Archibald Crawford.

She emigrated to New Zealand & married Peter Rankin, a clothier, on 2 August 1866 at Clutha Ferry, South Otago. They had two children.

Peter was declared insolvent in 1868 and the family moved to Clyde in Central Otago where Peter set up business again.

1876 saw the family in Clinton, South Otago before shifting to Dunedin the following year where Peter opened his business in the Arcade.

The business was declared insolvent in 1882 and again in 1887.

When Jane signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Great King St, Dunedin.

Peter died in 1902 and is buried in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.

Jane moved to Lower Hutt where her daughter Agnes (See 48 Agness F Rankin) was living and she died there on 10 September 1919.

She is buried with her son in the Taita Cemetery, Lower Hutt
