Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Jane Samson Sim was born on 4 December 1844 in Edinburgh, Scotland – the daughter of James Sim and Jane Samson.

Her mother died soon after her birth and her father re-married the following year.

In 1858 the family emigrated to Otago on the “Strathfieldsaye” and settled on the Otago Peninsula.

Jane married James Bayne on 18 April 1873 at the family home and they had three children.

James left the family in the 1880’s and he lived with a widow in Leith Valley, Dunedin and had a further three children.

Jane signed the suffrage petition in Arthur Street, Dunedin although where she was living at the time is unclear.

James died in 1911 – he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.

Jane died on 7 July 1929 at her daughter’s home in Dunedin – she is buried in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
