Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Janet Morrison was born on 5 March 1838 in Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of James Morrison a licenced victualler and spirit dealer, and Janet Robb.
She married John Allan, a woollen warehouseman, on 30 April 1861 in Glasgow and they had six children.
In 1875 Janet and the children boarded the Auckland bound for Otago. Janet was accompanied by her sister in law, also called Janet – John appears to have sailed earlier.
The family settled in Dunedin where their next three children were born.
When Janet signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maori Hill.
John died in 1912 and Janet died on 12 October 1921 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
