Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Cameron was born about 1856 in Australia – the daughter of James Cameron and Isabella Bain. She came to Otago with her family in about 1862. Her father died soon after their arrival, possibly the James Cameron who died in February 1863 and who is buried in the Southern Cemetery.

When she signed the suffrage petition Janet was living in Lower York Place, Dunedin with her mother and working as a seamstress.

She did not marry and was a 'very devoted member of the Methodist Church throughout her life, having been a Sunday school scholar in Trinity Sunday School, and [...] had taken a very active part in the Cargill Road Methodist Church.'

Janet died on 4 April 1930 and she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.

She left legacies in her will to the Methodist Orphanage, Papanui; Methodist Home Mission Fund; Methodist Solomon Islands Mission and Cargill Rd Methodist Church and Sunday School.
