Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Janet Alexander Pollock was born on 28 February 1826 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Pollock and Violet Paterson.

She married John Logan, a messenger at arms, on 14 December 1847 in Greenock, Renfrewshire and they had a daughter the following year.

The family sailed for New Zealand in 1853 on the Constantine arriving on 1 January 1854 in Nelson. The ship then sailed for Wellington then, in March, the family sailed for Otago on the Eliza.

They settled in Dunedin at 'Violet Grove' in Royal Terrace and they had a further three children.

John worked for many years as clerk to the Superintendent of Otago and when Janet signed the suffrage petition she gave her address as Highcliff on the Otago Peninsula where her daughter was living. (See 33 Jessie Hodge)

John died in 1895 and Janet died on 27 July 1899. She was 'well known, and very highly respected, having been connected with the origination of several useful philanthropic agencies'.

She is buried with John in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
