Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jane/Jeannie Monteith was born about 1864 in Melbourne, Australia – the daughter of Henry Monteith and Jane Lamont.

She came to New Zealand with her family in 1868 on the Gothenburg and she married George Prain, a customs officer, at her parent’s home in Woodville on 8 April 1891.

When Jeannie signed the suffrage petition they had moved to Dunedin and were living in Walker Street.

They had five children, the youngest was born in 1899, when the following year on 22 July Jeannie died at their home, aged 35 years.

George died in 1914 – they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
