Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Jessie/Janet Davidson was born in 1868 in New Zealand – the daughter of John Davidson, a labourer, and Janet Mills.

She married Charles James Barlow, a painter, on 24 December 1884 and they had 12 children, three who died in infancy.

When Jessie signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Maria St, South Dunedin.

In 1905 Charles died suddenly of heart failure, aged 48.

The Caledonian Bowling Club, of which Charles was a member, started a subscription to raise money for Jessie and her nine children. By January 1906 £150 had been raised 'which is to be disbursed weekly as may be decided upon.'

Jessie died on 2 December 1931, she is buried with Charles in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
