Janet/Jessie McKinlay was born in 1866 in New Zealand – the daughter of John McKinlay, a farm labourer, and Grace Inglis MacAdam. (See 68 Grace McKinlay)
When Jessie signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Allandale Rd, St Clair, Dunedin working as a dressmaker.
She married James Lyall, a storeman, in 1899 and they had one son.
By 1925 they were living in Glen Eden, Auckland.
James died in 1928 and Jessie died on 17 June 1952 – they are buried together in the Waikumete Cemetery.
