Jessie Sligo was born in 1872 in Victoria, Australia, the daughter of Archibald Sligo, a painter, and Jessie McDonald.
Jessie came to New Zealand with her family in 1879. When she signed the suffrage petition, she was living with her family in Caversham Rise, Dunedin and working as a dressmaker.
Jessie married Alexander McRae, a sheep farmer, in 1907. They had four children and lived near Hyde in Central Otago.
Alexander died in 1929. Jessie died on 28 April 1956. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
