Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Jessy Mary Waimate Scott was born in New Zealand (presumably at Waimate) in 1865, the daughter of William Henry Scott and Elizabeth Ann.
On 13 December 1887, Jessy married Tasman William Brownell at St Mary’s Church, West Oxford, Canterbury.
They had three children and, when Jessy signed the suffrage petition, the family was living in Forth St, Dunedin. Tasman was working as a traffic inspector.
In 1896 Tasman was appointed Registrar of births, marriages and deaths for the Ellesmere district. The family moved back to Otago for a time before ending up in Christchurch.
Jessy died on 23 October 1915, while visiting her mother in Wellington. She is buried in the Linwood Cemetery, Christchurch.
Tasman died in 1940 and is buried in the Waimairi Cemetery.
