Biographical information provided by Lenie Nilsen, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Julia Berland (nee Cranefield) was born in Australia on 30 April 1959 and christened 26 June at St Stephens, Richmond, Victoria.

Her father was William and mother Henrietta.  In 1882 Julia married Jules Berland in Dunedin. She bore at least six children – one son died in training camp in November 1918, possibly of influenza.

Julia died suddenly on 1 January 1904 at her home in Walker Avenue, Dunedin at age 46.  On her obituary were the words: Deeply regretted.  'We never knew mother’s worth, Or missed the love she gave, Until within the cold, cold earth Her silent form was laid.' Inserted by her loving sons and daughters.
