Julia Mary Hamer was born in 1846 in Herefordshire, England – the daughter of Thomas Hamer & Elizabeth Ann Lewis.
She married James Broadfoot, a widower and postman, in Dunedin on 4 August 1869.
They had eight children. In 1875 James resigned his job as postman and started selling coal. He was declared bankrupt in 1890.
When Julia signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Smith St, Caversham.
James died in 1913 and Julia died on 29 February 1920, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
