Kate Oliver Brown was born in Herefordshire, England in 1866 – the daughter of Thomas Oliver Stokes, a farmer, and Eliza Beeby.

She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1879 on the Wanganui and they settled in Dunedin.

She married John Hicks Brown, a coal merchant, in 1888 and they had five children.

When Kate signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Main Rd, Kensington.

John died in 1929 and Kate died on 21 August 1945, they are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery.
