Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.
Katherine Jones was born about 1851 in Ireland – the daughter of William Jones, a farmer, and Eliza. (See 170 Eliza Jones)
She married William Brown on 3 November 1875 in Coleraine in Londonderry and they had two children before they emigrated to Otago in the 1870’s, possibly on the “Forfarshire” in 1879. They had, at least, one more child after their arrival - a daughter who died aged 9.
When Katherine signed the suffrage petition they were living in Kelvin Grove, North East Valley and William was working as a groom.
William died in 1900 and Katherine died at her son’s home on 26 May 1909 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
