Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Lizzie/Elizabeth Taylor was born on 17 April 1853 in Langton, Berwickshire, Scotland – the daughter of John Taylor, a tenant farmer, and Elizabeth Dixon.

She married, school teacher, John Allardice on 29 December 1875 and shortly after their marriage they moved to Lerwick in the Shetland Islands.

They had five children, two who died in infancy, before they sailed for Otago in 1883 on the “British King”.

Their last two children were born there.

John taught at the Boys’ High School in Dunedin for two years before he was appointed to the post of rector of the Port Chalmers District High School.

In 1888 he became headmaster of Kaikorai School in Dunedin.

When Elizabeth signed the suffrage petition they were living in Tweed Street.

John died in 1893 after a long illness – he is buried in the Northern Cemetery.

Elizabeth moved to London Street where the following year she was offering “superior board and residence” at Waitotara House.

In 1895 her household furniture was auctioned prior to her move to Australia.

She lived in Redfern, New South Wales as the wife of George Dallas although no marriage can be found.

In 1899 her daughter died in tragic circumstances when she became involved with a married man - they died in either a double suicide or murder/suicide.

Elizabeth lived as Mrs Dallas until, at least, 1903.

She died as Elizabeth Allardice on 24 July 1941 in Prahan, Victoria & she is buried with her two youngest sons in the St Kilda Cemetery.
