Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Louisa Miller was born in Victoria, Australia in 1858 – the daughter of Lewis Miller and Jane Doughty, both from Scotland.

In 1865 Louisa came to Otago with her parents and four siblings on the “Gothenburg” from Melbourne.

They settled near Queenstown in an area that was known as Miller’s Flat (not the Millers Flat near the Clutha River).

On 20 August 1879 Louisa married William Craigie of Skippers Creek. They had four daughters who attended school at Skippers until about 1890 when the family came to Dunedin. William still appeared to be a miner as he died at Frankton Hospital in 1901 of “English Cholera”.

Louisa petitioned the court in November of 1901 to get an allowance for her two youngest daughters from their father’s estate as she needed to work while they were at school.

Louisa died on 19 March 1928 in Christchurch and she is buried in the Bromley Cemetery.
