Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Louisa Offelan was born about 1847 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Henry O’Sullivan Ffelan and Bridget Beda Barron.

She married Orlando Grave, a carpenter, on 6 May 1868 in Emerald Hill, Victoria.

They had four children in Victoria before the family sailed for Otago in 1876 on the Arawata.

They settled in Caversham, Dunedin where, in May 1877, their two daughters died two weeks apart.

When Louisa signed the suffrage petition the family were living in High St, Caversham.

Orlando died at their home in 1909 and Louisa died on 13 August 1918.

She had been burning papers in her backyard when her clothes caught fire – she was taken to the hospital but the burns were fatal.

Louisa is buried with Orlando and their daughters in the Southern Cemetery.
