Louisa Kate Rickman was born on 13 August 1851 in Marylebone, London, England. Her parents were Hannah Bartlett and William Rickman. She married Thomas Goulden Brickell in Hammersmith, London, on 15 August 1874. Thomas was born at Enmore Green, Dorset, in 1851. He was the son of Richard Brickell and Mary Ann Goulden. Louisa and Thomas had three children in England before they emigrated about 1879. Three more children were born in New Zealand between 1881 and 1884. They were all educated at Kaikorai School. In the 1890s the family was living in High Street (now Highgate}, Roslyn. Stone’s Directory gives Thomas’s occupation as a box manufacturer. He died in 1899, at Woodhaugh, Dunedin. Louisa was living at 9 Springhill Road, Dunedin when she died on 17 March 1939. They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
