Lucie Elizabeth Marie Laurent was born and educated in England. While living in France she married Major Prosper Laurent of the French Army.  In 1876 they went to Australia where he died twelve months later. She settled in Auckland with her daughters Louise Maria, Adele Marianne and Lottie Maria. In 1878 she gave birth to a son who died in infancy. Lucie started a kindergarten in Auckland and then had a stationery business in Karangahape Road. After 40 years in Auckland, she went to live in Dargaville with her daughter Lottie. She spoke English, French, German, Italian and Spanish fluently. Lucie died in 1930 in Dargaville.
