Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Alexander was born on 21 December 1870 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland, the daughter of William Alexander, a carpenter, and Mary Munro.

In the early 1870s Margaret emigrated to Ontario, Canada with her parents, before coming to New Zealand about 1878.

The family settled in Dunedin. When she signed the suffrage petition, Margaret was living with her family in Duncan St, working as a milliner. Margaret's mother, Mary Alexander, also signed the petition.

She married Edwin Ernest Nicolson, an accountant, on 11 March 1897 at her parent’s house. They had four children.

Margaret died on 27 March 1945 and Edwin died in 1965. They were both cremated and buried in the family plot.
