Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Mary Ann Love was born about 1851 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Josiah Love, a bricklayer, and Mary Ann Parsons.

She came to New Zealand with her family in the 1860’s and they settled in Dunedin.

Mary married James Charles Braid on 7 September 1870 at St Paul’s Church in Dunedin and they had five children.

They lived, at first, at Andersons Bay before moving to Ascotvale, North East Valley where Mary signed the suffrage petition.

James died in 1903 and Mary died at her home on 31 January 1935 – they are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
