Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley
Margaret Thomson was born about 1848 in Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Thomson, a carter, and Margaret Dunlop.
She emigrated to Otago in 1849 with her parents and sister on the Mariner and the family settled in Dunedin.
Margaret married John Carter, a draper, on 24 December 1868 in Dunedin.
Their son was born on 11 October 1869 and John died two weeks later while working in Oamaru.
Margaret did not re-marry and when she signed the suffrage petition she was living in Filleul St with her widowed mother.
She died on 4 June 1900 and is buried with John in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
