Marion Edmiston was born on 21 July 1861 in Renfrewshire, Scotland. She was the daughter of Robert Edmiston, a woollen shawl weaver, and Margaret Macbeth.         

Marion arrived in New Zealand with her family in 1874 on the Otago.

In 1893 Marion was living in St David St, Dunedin working as a tailoress, and her parents were living in Mosgiel.

In 1895 Marion married William Curry Thompson, a bootmaker. They had two daughters before Marion died on 17 July 1898 in Wellington. She is buried in the Karori Cemetery.
