Margaret Fleming Bain was born in 1861 in New Zealand – the daughter of Robert Bain, a farmer, and Mary Westland.

She grew up in North Otago and when she signed the suffrage petition Margaret was living in Hanover St, Dunedin working as a saleswoman.

She married John Sampson, a widower with one daughter and a farmer from British Columbia, Canada, on 13 February 1901 at her parents’ home.

After their marriage they travelled to Chilliwack in British Columbia where John was a successful farmer and they had three children.

They spent about fifteen years in Cadboro Bay in Victoria before moving back to Chilliwack in the mid 1920’s.

John died in 1940 and Margaret died on 2 March 1948. She is buried with John in the Chilliwack Cemetery.
