Margaret White Forgan was born on 3 October 1861 in Dundee, Scotland – the daughter of Thomas Forgan, a ship wright, and Joanna Guthrie.
She emigrated to Otago in 1876 with her father and brother on the Invercargill.
When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living with her father in Grange St, Dunedin.
She married James Lent Martin, a metaphysician or suggestive therapist, in 1898.
They had no children and lived Westland before settling in Hawera.
Margaret died in New Plymouth on 16 August 1946 and James died in 1948.
They were both cremated at the Wanganui Aramoho Cemetery.
