Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary McCutcheon was born on 21 June 1857 in Girvan, Ayrshire, Scotland – the daughter of Hugh McCutcheon, a cattle dealer, and Mary McQuaker.

Her mother died shortly after her birth and her father re-married in 1859. (See 120 Margaret McCutcheon)

Mary emigrated to Otago with her family on the William Davie in 1870 and they settled in Dunedin.

She married John Driley Frew, a painter, on 23 July 1880 – they had eight children, three who died in infancy, - when Mary signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waverley St, South Dunedin.

John died in 1907 and Mary died at her home on 23 November 1923, they are buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
