Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Marjory Alice Dick was born about 1851 in Philadelphia, USA – the daughter of John Dick, a printer, and Eliza Griffiths.

She came to Otago with her family in 1861 on the Chile and they settled in Dunedin.

Marjory married John Hercus, a commission agent, on 9 September 1875 at Royal Terrace, Dunedin and they had seven children.

When she signed the suffrage petition the family were living at Ferguslie, North East Valley.

John died at their home in 1913 and Marjory died on 12 April 1921, they are buried together in the Southern Cemetery.
