Biographical information provided by Gerry McGlinchy for the He Tohu exhibition:

Margaret Jamieson was born in Brindister, Shetland on 14 August 1861. After the death of her mother Elspeth (1869) and father Magnus (1873) the family, cared for by the three oldest sisters, migrated to Port Chalmers on the Timaru, arriving in July 1876.

Margaret grew up a comitted Methodist. Around 1890 she was appointed matron of the Dunedin YWCA. She left for work in Melbourne during 1901, and for ten years was matron in a home for inebriates. During this period she became a deaconess. From there she moved to Sydney where she was matron of the City Mission Brunswick Babies’ Home.

Margaret died in Sydney on 23 April 1942. She was remembered for her good work but also as 'a very loveable woman... who also liked a bit of fun.'
