Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Martha Jane Marshall married James Archibald Todd in Sydney in 1868 and they had a daughter the following year.

Martha’s death record gives her birth date as about 1854 but, due to her marriage date, this is obviously incorrect.

In 1873 a warrant was issued for James’ arrest 'charged with deserting his infant female child Elizabeth'.

Sometime after this Martha and her daughter came to New Zealand where she married George Spencer Lamb, a waiter, in 1881.

When Martha signed the suffrage petition they were living in Waverley St, South Dunedin.

In 1895 George took over the licence for the Pelichet Bay Hotel which they ran until 1898.

In 1900 they moved to the Brighton Hotel at Brighton, south of Dunedin.

George died there in February 1901 - Martha moved back to Dunedin where she died on 30 August the same year.

They are buried together in the Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.
