Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Rosewarne Hollow was born in 1855 in Victoria, Australia – the daughter of Christopher Hollow and Mary Davey Rosewarne. (See 45 Mrs Hollow)

She married William Bennett, a school teacher, on 20 January 1875 at her parents’ home in Geelong.

They had two sons in Victoria then another son in New Zealand. They appear to have visited Victoria in 1884 as one of their sons died on the voyage.

They returned to Otago where William was appointed as headmaster of the Macandrew Road School and they had a further 6 children.

When Mary signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Macandrew Road.

William died in 1908 when he was struck by a tram while riding his bicycle and Mary died on 13 August 1932 at her daughter’s home in Andersons Bay.

They are buried together in the Southern Cemetery. Mary obituary said she was a 'well known and highly respected Methodist.'
