Maria Turner was born about 1852, she married Robert Slater in 1872 in Cumberland, England and they had four children, three who died in infancy.

The family emigrated to New Zealand about 1880 and settled in Dunedin.

A further seven children were born in Dunedin and when Maria signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Caversham.
