Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Swinton was born on 9 October 1871 in Glasgow, Scotland – the daughter of David Swinton and Janet Swinton.

Margaret, with her family, emigrated to Otago on the Canterbury in 1880. The family settled at Bowen St, Musselburgh near Dunedin where they kept dairy cows.

Margaret died not marry. She had a child in 1887 which only lived for five days.

Margaret worked as a tailoress and, after her parents died, she continued to live in the family home with another unmarried sister and a widowed sister.

Margaret died on 7 February 1962 and she is buried in the family grave in the Southern Cemetery.
