Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Harty was born about 1864 in County Kerry, Ireland – the daughter of John Harty and Honora.

She came to New Zealand with her family as a young child and attended Green Island school near Dunedin.

She married John De Courcy, a linesman, in 1888 – they had five children, one who died in infancy.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Playfair St, Caversham, Dunedin.

They later lived in Queenstown and Oamaru before returning to Dunedin where John died in 1928.

Margaret died in Christchurch on 18 September 1952, she is buried with John in the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
