Margaret Duncan was born on 10 December 1868 in Rosskeen, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland – the daughter of William Duncan, an engineer, and Catherine Wilson. (See 85 Catherine Duncan) She emigrated to Otago with her family in 1875 on the Invercargill and they settled in Dunedin.

When Margaret signed the suffrage petition she was living with her family in Eden Street working as a saleswoman.

She did not marry and she died on 29 July 1928 - she is buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
