Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Margaret Jennings was born about 1832, the daughter of Bridget Jennings.

Margaret married William Galbraith in New Zealand in 1862 and they had one son.

In 1864 Margaret married Stephen Riordan, a tide waiter. They had two children, and their daughter Delia also signed the petition.

In 1866 Margaret’s mother Bridget transferred the licence of the Otago Hotel, Port Chalmers to her son-in–law Stephen Riordan. Stephen did not pay for the hotel and, in 1869, Bridget took proceedings to reclaim the money owed. At the time Stephen’s health had caused him to be confined in the Dunedin Lunatic Asylum. Bridget sold the hotel in November of 1869.

The family moved into Dunedin and in 1883 were living in Upper MacLaggan St, where Margaret was fined five shillings for using obscene language.

Stephen died there the following year and Margaret’s eldest son died in 1888.

Margaret died at her daughter’s house on 28 September 1907. She is buried in the Southern Cemetery with her husband and family.
