Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley.

Margaret Ann Douglass was born about 1851.

She married widower James Arthurson in 1887 in New Zealand.

They had one daughter and when Margaret signed the suffrage petition they were living in Opoho, Dunedin.

James appears to have had a problem with alcohol – he was convicted several times of drunkenness and he had a prohibition order issued against him.

He died in 1918 in Dunedin and is buried with his first wife in the Northern Cemetery.

Margaret died at her daughter’s home at Mayfield in Canterbury on 4 October 1932 – she is buried in the Ashburton Cemetery.
