Martha Paton Newton was born in 1867 in New Zealand, the daughter of James Newton, a quarryman, and Isabella Barr.
Martha had a daughter in 1883. In 1890, she married Charles Manderson Brown, a carter. They had four children together and lived in Dundas St, Dunedin. It was here that Martha signed the petition. (Martha's mother, Isabella, also signed the petition).
James died in 1936 and Martha died on 24 April 1942. They are buried together in the Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
