Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Ann McGinley was born about 1841, either in England or New South Wales.

Her father apparently died in the mid 1850s in New South Wales, Australia – after this Mary came to New Zealand with her mother.

Her sister Elizabeth also came to live in Otago. (See 92 E A Sinclair)

Mary and her mother lived at various places in Otago before settling at Adams Flat where she married Joseph Henry Kilner, a miner, in 1874 and where she signed the suffrage petition.

They had seven children and spent their lives at Adams Flat where Joseph died in 1911 and Mary died on 11 June 1915, they are buried together in the Fairfax Cemetery, Milton.

Mary’s obituary said she was an 'old and highly-respected resident of Tokomairiro district...she was endeared to all with whom she came in contact.'
