Biography contributed by Katherine Blakeley

Mary Ann Beady was born in 1845 in Shropshire, England – the daughter of George Beady, a shoemaker, and Tryphena Roberts.

She married William Lewis, a carpenter, in 1872 – they had two sons and lived in Birmingham.

In 1882 Mary Ann and William emigrated to Otago on the Mennock as second cabin passengers with one of their sons, the other may have died before their departure or on the voyage.

The family name changed to Lewisham at this time.

Four more children were born in New Zealand, one who died in infancy.

When Mary Ann signed the suffrage petition the family were living in Great King St, Dunedin and William was working as a plumber.

William died at his home in Great King St in 1915 and Mary Ann died on 22 October 1920. They are buried in the family grave in the Northern Cemetery.
